This past summer, I had the incredible opportunity to intern at Genentech in their Pharmaceutical Technical Development division. Here, I worked on an Innovation team focused on digital transformation within the department of Protein Analytical Chemistry. The goal of my project was to create a modern web application for the department’s mass spectrometry data management. In two short months, I conceptualized, branded, and built a new cloud-hosted application. This required front-end development in React.js/JavaScript and backend development in Python, as well as quickly picking up an understanding of consuming Rest API endpoints, using GraphQL, designing data architecture, and creating a data pipeline. I collaborated with stakeholders and used my scientific background to effectively act as a liaison between software IT teams and teams of scientists. I was also able to incorporate my knowledge of design requirements as well as conduct user interviews to create a quality product that meets user needs.
